Risk of Neurodegenerative Disease After Multiple TBIs
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of death and disability worldwide, and recent evidence suggests it may lead to neurodegenerative disorders (such as Alzheimer’s) later in life. However, the impact of multiple TBIs is not clear; additional neurological damage and inflammation may differ as a single patient sustains multiple TBIs over time.
A recent animal study in China investigated the impact of multiple TBIs. They replicated either one or multiple TBIs in an animal model at 24 hour intervals before assessing neurological outcomes, physical changes to brain structure, and chemical activity as a result of inflammation. After analysis, they found that both single and repetitive TBIs are correlated with increased risk of neurodegenerative disorders. However, those participants who accumulated multiple TBIs over time demonstrated more severe neurological damage and long-term inflammation, which can have serious consequences for years after the initial injuries.
The consequences of TBI are complex, and they may become significantly more severe when an individual sustains multiple TBIs over time – even when recovery has already occurred. TBI-prone individuals, such as athletes and soldiers, may be particularly affected by the neurodegeneration and long-term inflammation associated with multiple TBIs. Clinicians should specially account for these consequences when treating patients who have accumulated TBIs over time.
