A group of researchers recently proposed The Hopkins Model, a structured program designed to meet patients’ specific neuropsychiatric needs during the post-TBI recovery process. This approach integrates two existing programs, the Brain Rehabilitation Program and the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program, into the comprehensive Program of Enhanced Psychiatric Services (PEP). Case studies of two adults with TBI indicated that their psychological disturbances (for example, instances of depression, aggression, and irritability) decreased significantly over the course of PEP treatment.
Typical outpatient care may not adequately address the needs of TBI patients with ongoing neuropsychological disruptions. A more personalized, integrative approach such as PEP may help patients recover more quickly and achieve a fuller quality of life.
