Flavonoid helps rebuild white matter after infant brain injury.

flavonoid and white matterCerebral hypoxia-ischemia is a common cause of infant brain injury, in which the brain is deprived of blood and oxygen during birth. This lack of blood and oxygen is especially damaging to the white matter connections in the brain. A loss of brain connections resulting from damaged white matter can cause cognitive impairment, and infants who survive cerebral hypoxia-ischemia will frequently show cognitive impairment as they develop through childhood.

Recent research has found that certain nutraceuticals can help repair and rebuild lost white matter connections. Quecetin, a flavonoid widely found in many foods, is one such potential intervention, as it is known to be highly anti-inflammatory and anti-ischemic. In a recent animal study, researchers found that administering quecetin after cerebral hypoxia-ischemia increased white matter levels and decreased cognitive deficits within 30 days after injury.

Quecetin may be a safe and effective intervention that helps to rebuild injured white matter tracts after a hypoxic-ischemic injury.
