Combined Stem Cell And Hypothermia Therapy May Be Beneficial For Brain Injury

Stem cell therapy for traumatic brain injury holds great potential, but the research has been difficult due to the low survival rate of the stem cells. A new study has found that the addition of mild hypothermia (lowered temperature) may create an ideal environment for stem cell survival.

When comparing the transplantation of stem cells in a normal environment versus stem calls in a mildly hypothermic environment, the combination of stem cells and hypothermia provided the greatest advantage for both neural regeneration and functional recovery, after severe traumatic brain injury.
