Appropriations Update – June 6, 2011

On Wednesday, June 1, 2011, the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee considered top line funding for defense programs in Fiscal Year 2012. The approved bill included $32.3 billion, $935 million more than the 2011 enacted level and $119 million more than the president's request, for military health care.

This week, to follow up on the FY12 appropriations request submitted to the Subcommittee by Congresswoman Giffords office, the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force sent a letter to the Subcommittee urging full funding for the TBI post acute medical treatment guidelines that were approved by the House Armed Services Committee last month.

Line Item funding levels will not be released until after the full Appropriations Committee meets later this month, however, BIAA will continue to monitor the situation closely and urge funding for the project.

A bill to designate funding for the Department of Health and Human Services for Fiscal Year 2012, including programs authorized through the TBI Act and NIDRR's TBI Model Systems of Care program, is slated to be considered on August 2, 2011. BIAA and NASHIA have secured letters of support from both the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force and like-minded organizations to sustain and bolster funding for brain injury programs.

BIAA will likely call on grassroots advocates to take action on this issue the week of August 1, 2011.
