Brain with Lights in Background

Manfred Tatzmann is the newly named Executive Director of the California Brain Injury Association (CALBIA).

Mr. Tatzmann comes to the position after more than thirty years of work in developmental disabilities and mental health services in Michigan, including the last six years as State of Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury Director. In that job he worked closely with the Michigan Brain Injury Association, survivors, family members, providers, and military and veterans organizations to develop one of the most comprehensive brain injury systems in the country.

Among his achievements was the development of a widely accepted guide for survivors and family members, and the first interactive web-based TBI training curriculum for professionals. The hallmark of his tenure was the cooperative and collaborative systems developed between providers, BIA support groups, and public programs. During this period Mr. Tatzmann also served on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators; chaired its 2006 Annual Conference, and provided testimony to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies on behalf of brain injury services.

He has been a frequent speaker at national and professional conferences advocating for brain injury services and mental disability services and provided brain injury consulting services to several states.

Mr. Tatzmann comes to California from northern Minnesota where, he most recently served as Executive Director of a community mental health center. He and his wife are looking forward to the change in climate.
