Study to Determine if Progesterone Can Help Treat Traumatic Brain Injuries

For many years, little was known about how to treat traumatic brain injuries.  While tremendous progress has been made recently, these injuries remain a mystery for many in the medical world.  However, one thing that some have noticed is that over the years, women have tended to recover faster and more completely from traumatic brain injuries than men, and researchers in England want to find out if this was merely a coincidence or if there is something to that perceived trend.

Specifically, researchers will study more than 1,200 traumatic brain injury patients around the world by providing some of them with progesterone, which is a female sex hormone.  Those conducting the study will want to find out whether or not the use of this hormone will promote faster and more complete healing for traumatic brain injuries.  This is being done after a study on rats in 2008 showed what were described as 'remarkable' results.
