New Line of Traumatic Brain Injury Insurance for Young Athletes to be Tested in Sacramento

In recent months, several jurisdictions around the county have passed laws that deal with the management of concussions and potential traumatic brain injuries suffered by young athletes that are designed to put protocols in place that minimize the chances of long-term harm.  This effort has led to innovation on many fronts, and one such idea is about to be tested in the Sacramento area – insurance coverage for baseline brain testing for high school athletes.

Wells Fargo’s Student Insurance Division is rolling out a new form of insurance coverage that it plans to test in the Sacramento area.  This coverage, known as the Play It Safe Concussion Care plan, would allow teams to purchase coverage that would provide for a baseline test for all athletes at the beginning of the season.  If an athlete suffers a concussion or a traumatic brain injury, an additional test would be performed and athletes would only be allowed to return to participation when they pass the second test.  This insurance coverage would cover the costs of that testing.

We hope that steps are taken in any context that promote the safety of young people with regards to traumatic brain injuries.  Statistics released in furtherance of this insurance effort reveal that every year, approximately 170,000 young athletes are treated for traumatic brain injuries in emergency rooms in the United States that were suffered during competition.
