Former NFL Players Sue League Over Drug Used for Traumatic Brain Injuries and Concussions |
|
Most people understand that football is a violent sport, and that’s particularly true of football that’s played at its highest level in the National Football League. More and more players who have retired are being diagnosed with dementia and other serious problems that result from traumatic brain injuries sustained during their playing careers. Now comes word that 12 former players have sued the NFL claiming that they were given medication that only made their brain injuries worse because of the tendency for that medication to lead to cerebral bleeding. The traumatic brain injury lawsuit , filed recently in New Jersey, claims that players in the recent past were given injections of a medication known as Toradol, which is in a class of medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAID’s. Toradol is a medication that basically numbs the feeling of pain in general, and in particular will reduce head pain. Unfortunately, it has also been found to lead to cerebral bleeding. Traumatic Brain Injury StatisticsUnfortunately, the players who may have been seriously injured because of the use of this medication that could have made their traumatic brain injuries worse will not be able to avoid many of the long-term ramifications of this substance. However, if this was happening, we hope that these claims are properly sorted out soon. In addition, many people in the United States suffer from traumatic brain injuries. Every year, more than 50,000 people die because of this injury and more than 85,000 live with long-term disability because of TBI’s.
