Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation May Help Brain Injury Recovery
Non-invasive brain stimulation is a method of stimulating certain areas of the brain from the outside of the skull. Methods of non-invasive brain stimulation include repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD).
Depending on the technique used, non-invasive brain stimulation can either reduce some of the excessive chemical response that occurs immediately after an injury, or increase recovery by encouraging neural growth and reorganization during the chronic phase of the injury.
Although there has been a great deal of research into the potential benefits of non-invasive brain stimulation after stroke, there have been very few studies for traumatic brain injury. In theory, these reasonably safe techniques should be able to restore function after brain injury, particularly in diffuse axonal injuries.
