Very long-term outcomes after traumatic brain injury.

Symptoms related to memory, thinking, physical and emotional health often persist after mild and moderate traumatic brain injury. However, these symptoms may persist longer than previously thought. A recent study found that TBI patients continued to report symptoms for an average of 29 years after their injury.

Although certain symptoms may persist for many years, the study found that improvement and adaptation may also continue for many years. It is therefore important to consider rehabilitation and support for the entire lifespan of the TBI survivor, and not just the short-term.
