The Biomechanics & Etiology of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers in San Francisco

Spinal cord injuries are caused by trauma to the spinal cord, which can disrupt the successful carrying of signals to parts of the body. Direct external harm (severed cord, crushed cord, compression injuries, vertebral dislocation/fracture, etc.) or internal harm (hemorrhagic applied pressure, disturbance in blood supply resulting in infarction, compression resulting from adjacent hemorrhage) to the cord can render a person paraplegic and quadriplegic, both of which are life-changing diagnoses.

Spinal cord injuries result from a plethora of tragedies, including car and truck accidents, medical negligence, slip and fall accidents, pedestrian and bicyclist accidents, construction accidents, sports accidents, assaults, and other causes. Due to the potentially exhaustless list of causes, liability concerns will vary widely, and must be carefully examined at the outset before counsel ever signs the case. Predictably, younger males (15 to 28 year olds) are at greater risk and account for the majority of spinal cord injuries.

Scarlett Law Group has assisted many individuals with spinal cord injuries, which has allowed us to gain invaluable knowledge regarding these kind of cases. Do not hesitate to contact us to learn more about your legal rights.

Paraplegia vs. Quadriplegia

Paraplegia results from injury or insult to the thoracic, lumbar or sacral areas of the spinal cord. Survivors with paraplegia generally lose physical and sensory capability (movement and feeling) in lower areas of the body (typically waist and lower). Quadriplegia results from injury or insult to the cervical area of the spinal cord. Survivors with quadriplegia generally lose physical and sensory capability (movement and feeling) in both upper and lower areas of the body. Impairment extends to all four limbs.

There are two kinds of degrees of spinal cord injuries:

  • Complete – Complete spinal cord injuries refer to the absolute loss of mobility in the body below the injured area
  • Incomplete – Incomplete spinal cord injuries refer to the partial loss of mobility in the body below the injured area
