Recently, the world’s leading United States-based helmet designer
and producer, Roy Burek from Charles Owen Inc., was awarded funding to
create a new material designed by researchers from Cardiff University’s
School of Engineering. Many believe this new technology can help keep
athletes, service members, and others safe from severe brain injuries
by dissipating and absorbing impacts.
Roy Burek from Charles Owen Inc. received this funding from a partnership
of sources, including:
- The National Football League
- Under Armor
- General Electric
- United States Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standard
Together, the organizations hope to fight against avoidable traumatic brain
injuries. The two foundations, Charles Owen Inc. and Cardiff University,
will use the funds over the 12-month period. During this time, they will
use state-of-the-art three-dimensional equipment to develop the energy-absorbing
materials in greater detail. These 3-D technologies will help make the
material stronger while maintaining flexible structure.
The various groups hope to make better helmets that will protect the lives
of athletes and people everywhere.
