Inhaled Nitric Oxide Improves Short Term Memory and Reduces Inflammatory Reaction in a Mouse Model of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

nitric_oxideIn this study, researchers attempted to increase their understanding of the effectiveness of inhaled nitric oxide for victims of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).

Mice were subjected to a test that induced mTBI, and then treated with inhaled nitric oxide for four or eight hours, treated for 24 hours, or left untreated. All groups of mice exhibited short term memory loss and inflammation of the brain; however, the groups that inhaled the nitric oxide for the short time spans recovered short term memory in shorter time spans than the group that inhaled nitric oxide for 24 hours and the untreated group.

The results suggest inhalation of nitric oxide in low doses over short time periods may reduce memory loss after an mTBI event, and could possibly be used to treat concussion victims.
