Multisensory Rehabilitation More Effective For Cognition Than Traditional Therapies For TBI

A recent animal study used repeated sensory and motor stimulation within an enriched environment (plenty of space, lots of toys, a quiet place to rest) to show that a multisensory environment is significantly more effective than traditional rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury. Positive effects were found in both cognitive and motor skills.

The researchers found that an intensive program of multisensory rehabilitation should be administered early after the injury in order to be most effective. Although the study used animal subjects, the results were positive enough to suggest application to human rehabilitation.
